The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) will launch a drive to open secure lockers or safe depositories at Bangladesh Bank's Motijheel branch.

It is reported that the lockers will be opened today (Sunday) in the presence of an executive magistrate of the Dhaka District Administration.

The ACC has received information that 300 former and current high-ranking officials of the central bank, including the money and other valuable documents, have been kept in safe deposit boxes. It is also known that some of these corrupt officials also have lockers in their names.

A list of financial assets or documents kept in these lockers will be made. If any assets are found that are outside of known income or inconsistent with income, the relevant persons will be investigated later.

On January 26, the ACC searched the locker of former Central Bank Deputy Governor SK Sur and found assets worth about Tk 5 crore. These are now in the custody of the Central Bank. During the raid, the ACC found some more lockers in the names of Central Bank officials.

It is suspected that lockers may also be in the names of those who are currently under investigation for corruption. For this reason, the ACC decided to search those lockers as well. In view of this, on February 2, the ACC wrote to the Governor of the Central Bank requesting him to take steps to ensure that no one can open those lockers. Since then, no one is being allowed to open the lockers of the Motijheel branch of the Central Bank. Source: Dhaka Post
